Letter to Bank manager for Re-activation of your Dormant Account

Generally, banks deactivate an account, in case there has been absolutely no transactions carried out for a long period of time (viz. 2-3 years). During deactivation period, you will not be able to do any kind of transactions, i.e. either deposit or withdrawal in cash or cheque payment, etc.

The bank will also, most probably, levy some charges for the dormant period in case the minimum balance, as may be required to be maintained for your bank account, falls below the limit prescribed.

The cause of deactivation of your dormant account is mainly because of the zero balance or very low balance in your account (say, below 100) for a long period of time. The bank will, of course, intimate you about the deactivation and about the further course of action on closure of your account if you do not maintain the minimum balance and if you do not lodge any request for re-activation within specific days.

In case, you are interested to maintain that account, then you have to file a reactivation request with the bank either in the format prescribed by the bank or through submission of a physical letter. You may use the following template to write such request letter to the bank.

Sub.: Reactivate my dormant bank account
  Ref: Savings account number: ..................

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have a savings account maintained in your bank at Okolp branch, bearing account number .................., which I had opened in the month of ....., 20.. I had been operating the account frequently from the beginning and there was always minimum balance maintained in the account. However, due to some financial issues that I have been facing lately, there was no transaction carried out in the account since the month of ....., 20.. as you must be already aware. Because of some urgent requirements, I had to withdraw the minimum balance amount too.

I have received your letter dated ............... regarding deactivation of my account because it has been dormant for a period beyond the limit prescribed as per the bank policy and I also understand the account will be closed if the minimum balance is not brought to its level by (date). I appreciate your position. I would like to inform you that I am willing to maintain this account for a long period of time. Hence, I am committed to deposit the required money by end of the bank closing hours today.

Therefore, I kindly request you to reactivate my savings account for today to enable me to deposit the required amount. I further submit my request that the dormant status of the account be removed once the deposit is made by me and the account be reinstated to its normal course so as to enable me to operate it.

Appropriate charges may kindly be deducted subsequent to the deposit of money by me.

Kindly do the needful at the earliest.

Thanking you!

Yours faithfully,
